I am from Plateau State, where my community has been on the receiving end of violence and terrorism. Imagine the pain and outrage when we learned that the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Ayo Omotayo, allegedly referred to the Berom people as a "militia." These are not words we expect from a leader of such a prestigious institution—an institution meant to guide Nigeria's policymakers in crafting strategies that promote peace and unity.

These remarks, if accurately reported, are not just hurtful but profoundly dangerous. In a country like Nigeria, where ethnic tensions can easily escalate into violence, a statement from someone in such a high office carries immense weight. It can mislead and perpetuate misconceptions that put communities like mine at further risk.

Public officials, especially those in roles that influence national policy, must adhere to the highest standards of integrity and responsibility. The NIPSS exists to foster intelligent discussions and informed policy-making, not to sow division or propagate stereotypes. A leadership that labels victims of aggression inaccurately fails the institute's mission and tarnishes its reputation.

The people of Plateau State deserve an apology, and Nigeria deserves a NIPSS that exemplifies fairness and accuracy. We call on Ayo Omotayo to take responsibility for his actions and resign from his position as Director-General.
