Hold Minister Nahanni Fontaine Accountable for Her Remarks on Charlie Kirk's Assassination
The Issue
On September 10th, Charlie Kirk—a brother in Christ and a voice for many—was assassinated in a brutal act of political violence. In the wake of this tragedy, Manitoba Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine reposted a message that labeled him “racist, xenophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic, sexist, and a white nationalist mouthpiece.” She went further, stating she had “absolutely no empathy” for him.
Let that sink in: a sitting minister in Canada publicly celebrated the death of a man she politically disagreed with. And yet, she remains in office.
This petition does not call for censorship. I believe in free speech. But public officials must be held accountable for the words they choose—especially when those words glorify violence or dehumanize others. Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
Compare this to what happened to Gretchen Felker-Martin, the comic book writer behind DC’s Red Hood reboot. After posting inflammatory comments about Charlie Kirk’s death, DC Comics canceled the series, refunded retailers, and severed ties with her—citing violations of their standards of conduct.
If a comic book writer can face consequences for such remarks, why is a government minister shielded from accountability?
I’m calling for formal disciplinary action—not cancellation, not humiliation, but a public reckoning. A censure. A clear message that elected officials must uphold a standard of integrity, even in disagreement.
Though I now live in Ontario, I was born in Manitoba and still have family there. I am Canadian. And I believe this country needs unity—not division fueled by hateful rhetoric from those in power.
Premier Wab Kinew, the people of Manitoba—and the rest of Canada—are watching.
We are calling for the following
1. Mandatory ethics and professional conduct training for Minister Fontaine, with public documentation confirming completion. This training should focus on respectful communication, ideological tolerance, and the responsibilities of public office.
2. A formal public statement of accountability from Minister Fontaine, acknowledging the harm caused and committing to uphold higher standards of conduct moving forward.
3. A written apology addressed directly to Charlie Kirk’s wife and family, recognizing the emotional impact of her comments and offering sincere regret.
4. While Premier Wab Kinew has publicly acknowledged the issue and asked Minister Fontaine to apologize, we believe further leadership is needed. We are asking for a public reaffirmation from Premier Kinew that elected officials must be held to a standard of respectful discourse, and that structured accountability is essential when those standards are breached.
Sign this petition to demand accountability and start restoring integrity to Canadian leadership.
