Hold Manlikepharoah accountable for gender-based violence and hate speech
The Issue
For too long, individuals like Manlikepharoah have used social media platforms to perpetuate gender-based violence and spew hateful rhetoric without facing any real consequences. I am deeply troubled by the actions of Manlikepharoah, an Instagram user who has bullied numerous women and actively promotes gender-based violence through his platform. His pattern of behaviour is not just harmful; it's dangerous and deters the voices of countless women in Nigeria who could otherwise be uplifted and empowered.
Recently, there have been numerous accounts from women who have been humiliated and terrified by the venomous attacks that this influencer has launched from the safety of his screen. These actions go beyond mere bullying—they foster a hostile environment that legitimizes hate speech and undermines the safety and rights of women in the digital space and beyond.
Gender-based violence in Nigeria remains a critical issue. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 28% of Nigerian women aged 15-49 have experienced some form of physical violence, and social media plays a significant role in both perpetuating and challenging these societal norms. Platforms like Instagram must not become a hotbed for such toxic narratives, especially from users who wield significant influence.
It's essential that Instagram implements stricter community guidelines and enforces them rigorously to prevent individuals like Manlikepharoah from using their platform to perpetuate violence and hate. There needs to be a clear message sent that gender-based violence and hate speech will not be tolerated.
We call upon Instagram to thoroughly investigate the actions of Manlikepharoah, hold him accountable, and take meaningful action either by restricting his content or removing his account altogether. This is not just about one individual but about creating a safer, more supportive online community for everyone.
Please join me in urging Instagram to take action against gender-based violence and hate speech by signing this petition. Together, we can foster a more respectful and inclusive digital space for all.
