Hold Law Enforcement Professionals Responsible for Unethical Actions and Wrongful Convictions

The Issue

More and more these days, we are hearing about people imprisoned for years and years for crimes, which they did not commit.  All too often, these convictions are the result of a rush to judgment, unethical practices, negligence and a need to win or be right at all costs, at every level, and within every department of the criminal justice system.  Each case of a wrongful conviction must be investigated fully in an effort to see if the actions of the professionals involved constituted negligence, unethical actions, and/or willful wrongdoing.  If it is determined that other adequately trained and experienced professionals would have made different decisions and judgments and come to different/correct conclusions, then those involved in the unethical or negligent behavior should be penalized somehow.  Just saying, “we’re sorry,” after incarcerating someone for the better part of his or her life is woefully inadequate.  If there were more consequences for such actions, professionals would take a much more discerning look at the facts, circumstances and evidence of each case.
