Hold Landlords Accountable for Breaching Lease Agreements

Hold Landlords Accountable for Breaching Lease Agreements
The Issue
We are a group of students from Cape Town, particularly in University of Western Cape located in Bellville, who are financially constrained and repeatedly find ourselves at the mercy of landlords who disregard our rights and manipulate the terms of lease agreements. Personally, I was hit hard when required to pay an admin fee - a financial burden that was supposedly waived for sponsored students like us. However, in my desperation, I ended up borrowing money to fulfill this unnecessary demand.
Misrepresentation and deceit by landlords are common challenges faced by student renters here in South Africa. A study by the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) reveals that landlord-tenant disputes continue to rise exponentially with many landlords trampling on the rights of vulnerable students by providing false information regarding lease agreements.
Our goal with this petition is to raise public awareness about landlords who disregard lease agreements and manipulate terms to their advantage. In South Africa, every citizen has the right to fair practices and equal treatment, as stipulated in the Constitution. Therefore, we believe relevant authorities should hold such landlords accountable and enact stricter regulations to protect student tenants from exploitation.
Your signature on this petition will amplify our voices and demand accountability from landlords who unscrupulously break the terms of lease agreements. Sign this petition and stand with us in our fight for fair rental practices in Bellville, Cape Town.
