The Issue

A school board member made a Nazi salute on camera at a public meeting. She apologized to those "offended." She is not resigning. That is not acceptable.

Kim Fisher, a member of the Deer Valley Unified School District governing board in Phoenix, Arizona, was caught on video making what community members, educators, and Jewish residents described as a Nazi salute during a board meeting in late May. When confronted at Tuesday's board meeting by a room packed with outraged parents, teachers, and community members, Fisher briefly addressed the crowd and left early — to boos and jeers.

Her apology was widely described as inadequate. Her defense was that the gesture was directed at the board president's "dictatorship." Community members were not satisfied. Jewish attendees spoke about family members lost in the Holocaust. The teachers' union — the Deer Valley Education Association — is now formally calling for her resignation.

Fisher has said she is not quitting. Fellow board members cannot remove her on their own. A recall election would be required.

The people calling for her accountability are right. A school board member serves the children and families of a community. Making a Nazi salute — on camera, at a public meeting — is a fundamental breach of that responsibility. An apology to those "offended" is not accountability. Resignation is.
