Hold ICE accountable for their actions

Hold ICE accountable for their actions
The Issue
As a third or fourth generation Mexican-American, I have witnessed and experienced the systemic disparities and injustices faced by people of color in the United States, particularly those from Latinx communities. These issues have been exacerbated by the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who have been linked to numerous incidents of excessive force, wrongful deportations, and terrifying raids that disrupt and traumatize communities. Our communities deserve better.
ICE was established with the mission to protect national security and public safety by enforcing immigration laws. However, the actions of some ICE agents have significantly deviated from this mission, resulting in tragic consequences. There have been too many instances of ICE agents using unnecessary force leading to injury or death, even involving U.S. citizens. A report released by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) documents various cases where ICE agents have violated civil rights, often operating without accountability and transparency. This wanton disregard for human life and dignity qualified by their actions should categorize these individuals as domestic terrorists.
For years, there have been calls for reform, yet too little has changed. It is time for systemic accountability. We must hold ICE agents accountable by implementing thorough investigations and establishing an independent oversight body that ensures transparency and justice. Moreover, ICE should provide comprehensive training to all agents focusing on human rights and racial sensitivity to prevent future harms. We need comprehensive reforms to prevent further suffering and carnage. This must include a federal mandate that subjects ICE agents to regular evaluations to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
In their current form, these agents and their unchecked power create fear, distress, and division. They operate in a manner that, by their actions, sows terror in communities, especially among marginalized groups—action fitting the definition of terrorism. Reclassifying these egregious acts can shift the narrative and predicate genuine change in approach and policy enforcement.
Join me in calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and associated federal agencies to reexamine ICE's framework, prioritize humane and respectful treatment of individuals regardless of their background, and hold their personnel accountable for unlawful activities. It’s imperative to safeguard the rights and lives of all individuals in this country, emphasizing empathy, fairness, and justice over fear and discrimination.
Change is needed now. Stand with me to demand a respectful and accountable approach that reflects the values of equality and humanity. Please sign this petition to make our stand known.
