The Issue

In Fresno, CA, we are witnessing a heart-wrenching stray crisis. Our city shelters, overwhelmed and underfunded, are turning away dogs onto the streets, leaving them unfixed and further exacerbating the overpopulation problem. Fosters and shelters are operating far beyond their capacities, yet we, the community, watch as city officials remain indifferent to this escalating crisis.

Our backyards have become makeshift shelters, struggling to accommodate the influx of abandoned animals. We've seen it all: dogs dumped in orchards, left to fend for themselves; pregnant dogs and litters unable to survive the harsh conditions; animals facing cruelty—poisoned, shot, burned. Shelters take days to rescue them, by which time it's often too late. Our community is tired of seeing this neglect and inaction.

It's appalling that stakeholders who should be responsible for addressing animal care are continuously failing in their duties. Instead of providing adequate funding to no-kill shelters, as intended by our tax contributions, our city turns to apathy. Large healthy dogs are being euthanized simply because there's no room or resources to care for them. This is not the humane and responsible treatment we stand for—it is a cycle of cruelty that's been accepted for far too long.

We need to implement real change now. It’s crucial for Fresno city officials and stakeholders to re-evaluate their policies and provide the necessary funding and resources for shelters to operate efficiently. Enforcing animal cruelty laws must become a priority. To end the unnecessary euthanizing of animals, Fresno should invest in sustainable solutions like spay and neuter programs, and extend support to fostering and rehabilitation initiatives.

We owe it to our community and the voiceless animals abandoned within it to demand accountability from our city stakeholders. Change is possible, but it requires immediate attention and action from those in positions of power. Help us bring this issue to the forefront of the city’s agenda.

Join us in urging Fresno city officials to prioritize funding and resources for humane animal shelter initiatives. Support a future where no animal has to suffer due to lack of care. Please sign this petition and help us create an empathetic and responsible Fresno for all its inhabitants.
