The Issue

Orelha was a dear 10-year-old community dog from Brazil, known for his gentle nature and cherished by the locals. Yet, his peaceful life was tragically cut short when he became the victim of unthinkable cruelty, tortured live for viewers on the American platform, Discord. This atrocious act was not just a shock to those who knew and loved Orelha, but also to anyone with compassion for animals. It highlighted a significant loophole on Discord's platform, which seems to have failed in its responsibility to prevent such heinous acts from being broadcasted.

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which is federal law in the United States, explicitly prohibits the involvement in animal cruelty and its promotion. By allowing such content to be live-streamed, Discord is in direct violation of this law. This is not merely a platform policy oversight - it is a legal and moral failure that needs to be addressed immediately.

As a passionate advocate for animal rights, this issue strikes at the core of my values. We cannot sit back while digital platforms provide a stage for monstrous acts of violence against the innocent. If we are to protect animals like Orelha from suffering, there must be accountability and change.

We are calling on Discord to be shut down for violating federal law and for allowing criminal networks to operate freely on their platform.

Furthermore, we urge U.S. lawmakers to hold Discord accountable under the PACT Act and ensure that justice is served for Orelha and all the voiceless victims of online animal cruelty.
