Hold Danville Community College accountable for Title IX violations

The Issue

In the small community of Danville, Virginia, my life took a heartbreaking turn. As a student at Danville Community College (DCC), I entrusted my education and well-being to the institution — a trust that was shattered by the appalling actions and neglect I faced at the hands of Professor Ted Maier.

After courageously disclosing my suicidal feelings to Professor Maier, instead of receiving the compassion and support any student deserves, I was met with a chilling response. His grotesque comment, that he would "look for me in the obituaries," struck me to my core. This heartlessness exacerbated my already fragile mental state, ultimately leading to a suicide attempt that landed me in a coma.

I awoke to a reality forever altered, bearing physical and emotional scars. My teeth were permanently damaged, my memory faltered, and my future career paths were forever diverged by the incident. What is worse, is the knowledge that this nightmare could have been averted had the college acted responsibly.

Danville Community College ignored my Title IX complaint regarding faculty misconduct and emotional abuse. Title IX is clear: students must not be discriminated against based on sex, which includes protection from harassment and abuse in educational institutions. DCC's failure to address this serious accusation not only violated federal law but also placed countless other students at risk.

This petition serves as a rallying cry for justice, not just for myself but for all who might suffer in silence. We demand a full investigation into DCC's handling of this Title IX complaint and insist on immediate reform to ensure that no other student is subjected to such abuse and neglect. Students should always feel safe and protected within their academic environments.

Join me in demanding accountability from Danville Community College. Let's protect our students and foster an educational environment built on respect, care, and ethical conduct. Sign this petition to call for action and drive change.
