Hold children’s services accountable

Hold children’s services accountable
The Issue
I am writing this petition with a heavy heart, driven by a deeply personal experience that opened my eyes to a broken system. My daughter was caught in a cycle of exploitation and drug use. Our family was desperate to give her the support she desperately needed. We turned to children's services, believing they would provide the help we could not. Yet, after investing significant time in their programs, we were informed that the only way to truly help her was to surrender legal permanent custody to them. They promised more help and support, things beyond what I could offer. However, they failed her. My daughter received no additional help, and the promises turned hollow. She, like so many others, fell through the cracks.
This is not an isolated case. Numerous children find themselves worse off after entering the care system, instead of receiving the protection and nurturing they truly deserve. According to reports, the children’s services system is riddled with alarming rates of negligence, leading to tragic deaths within their care. These are preventable losses, lives curtailed by a lack of accountability and oversight.
We must hold children's services accountable for these needless tragedies. They must be transparent and answer for the decisions and negligence that result in detrimental outcomes for the children under their care. More importantly, the process by which they gain custody of children needs thorough re-evaluation and overhaul.
Several steps can be taken to prevent further missteps and tragedies:
1. **Independent Oversight**: Establish an independent body to investigate and report on the operations, decisions, and care practices of children's services regularly.
2. **Transparent Reporting**: Implement strict reporting guidelines that mandate disclosure of any incidents, policies, and changes that directly impact the well-being of children in care.
3. **Parental Engagement**: Develop a more inclusive approach to engage parents and guardians actively in the decision-making process when it involves altering custody through children's services.
4. **Mandatory Training and Resources**: Provide comprehensive training for those working in children’s services to better handle cases involving exploitation, substance abuse, and mental health issues effectively.
It is tragic when the very institutions designed to protect our children become part of the problem. It’s time for a change. By signing this petition, we call on policymakers, government officials, and governing bodies to take immediate action and implement necessary reforms. This is for the betterment of our children's futures—their safety, happiness, and well-being should always be the priority.
