Petition updateHold CT university accountable for mishandling domestic violence caseBill Proposal Sent to Higher Education Committee BUT we need your HELP

On January 31, 2024, Representative Donna Veach sent a letter to the CT House of Representatives Higher Education & Employment Advancement Committee requesting that they consider raising a bill to require institutions of higher education to allow victims of intimate partner violence participate in any investigation or administrative hearing conducted by such institution in cases where the accused is a student but the victim is not.

This is a HUGE step in fixing the wrongs of the current CSCU policies regarding victims of domestic violence.  THANK YOU for signing my petition, BUT we still need MORE of your help.

In order for this proposal to move forward, the Committee MUST hear from members of the public and other legislators on WHY this proposal is so important.  This is the ONLY way this bill will move forward and be signed into law to ensure other non-student victims are included in the university processes of reported domestic violence/intimate partner misconduct.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO...

1. Click here and read the attached letter and Proposed Bill Request to the Higher Education Committee from Representative Veach.

2. Reach out to the Higher Education Committee members listed in the letter AND your local legislators ASAP.  This short session began February 7.  Tell them WHY this bill must move forward.   You can use this short script  "I (state your name and town) support Representative Donna Veach's January 31 bill proposal to the Higher Education Committee to require institutions of higher education to allow victims of domestic/intimate partner violence participate in any investigation or administrative hearing conducted by such institution in cases where the accused is a student but the victim is not. Non-student victims should have the same rights in the process as students.  Please encourage the Higher Education Committee to move this bill forward." Click here for the list of Higher Education Committee members and how to contact them.

I will be submitting this petition and your comments to the Committee as well. However with YOUR ADDITIONAL INPUT, we will emphasize to CT legislators the importance of this bill and why it will give more rights to victims of domestic/intimate partner violence on college campuses.

Thank you!
