Hold Carlo De Falco Accountable for His Stadium Backflip
The issue
When members of our community elect a representative, we trust them to uphold the promises and values that they campaigned on. Unfortunately, the trust we placed in Carlo De Falco, a member of the Tasmanian Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party, has been betrayed.
Carlo De Falco was elected primarily because of his strong stance on a significant issue affecting many Tasmanians. Yet, it is incredibly disappointing to see that since being elected, he has backflipped on this promise, leaving many of his constituents feeling misled and unrepresented.
Transparency and accountability are core tenets of a thriving democratic society. An elected official should not be allowed to change course without explaining their rationale to the electorate. It is crucial for the integrity of our political system that such behaviour is scrutinised and addressed.
To:
The Honourable Members of the Parliament of Tasmania
Tasmanian Electoral Commission
Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party (Tasmania)
Subject: Loss of Public Confidence Due to Policy Reversal on the Macquarie Point Stadium
We, the undersigned residents of Tasmania, express our deep concern regarding the conduct of Mr Carlo De Falco, an elected representative of the Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party.
Mr De Falco was elected on a platform that included strong opposition to the Macquarie Point Stadium project, primarily on the grounds of its unaffordability, budgetary burden, and the redirection of public funds away from essential community needs such as healthcare, housing, and core services.
Following the election, Mr De Falco has reversed his stance on this matter, contradicting his public commitments and the expectations of the Tasmanian voters who elected him. This policy backflip has raised significant concerns regarding:
- The transparency of his decision-making.
- Whether external political pressures or influences may have shaped his reversal.
- Whether the interests of outside organisations, including the AFL or other entities, are being prioritised over the interests of Tasmanian constituents.
We therefore respectfully request:
1. A full public explanation from Mr De Falco detailing the reasons for his decision to reverse his position on the Macquarie Point Stadium.- We demand that De Falco provide a clear and transparent explanation for his change of stance, beyond simply listening to a small portion of Tasmanians who support the Mac Point Stadium, and outline how he plans to remain committed to his constituents moving forward.
- An independent inquiry into any communications, lobbying efforts, or external pressures from political bodies, the AFL, or government entities that may have contributed to this policy shift.
- Strengthened transparency requirements for all elected representatives who significantly alter their public positions after election.
- Consideration of whether Mr De Falco has breached the trust of the electorate and whether he should resign and return the mandate to voters if he is unwilling to uphold the platform on which he was elected.
Statement of Principle
Tasmanians deserve elected representatives who act with honesty, reliability, and accountability. When a representative reverses a central position without a clear, transparent justification, it undermines public trust and damages the integrity of democratic processes.
We also call upon the Tasmanian Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party to hold Carlo De Falco accountable for his actions.
This is not only about Carlo De Falco’s actions, but also about setting a precedent that no elected official in Tasmania can disregard their campaign promises without facing public scrutiny.
We therefore ask that the Parliament give this matter urgent and serious consideration.
Sign this petition to demand transparency, accountability, and the reestablishment of trust between elected officials and their constituents. Let us stand together for the values of integrity and honesty in our political system.
