Tomorrow, at noon on October 28, Canada Post will shut down the Vic West postal outlet despite overwhelming public opposition.
For 16 years, this outlet has served the heart of our community, a walkable, accessible service for seniors, small businesses and residents without vehicles. It is cost-neutral and revenue-generating for Canada Post, yet it’s being closed under the guise of “network management.”
In just a few weeks, more than 1,000 people have signed our petition calling for accountability, transparency and a suspension of this closure. Canada Post’s leadership, the Minister responsible, and the Board of Directors have remained silent.
Last week, MP Will Greaves finally weighed in with a letter to Canada Post’s CEO about four postal outlet closures in his riding, including Vic West, just days before our scheduled shutdown. Unfortunately, his letter offered no clear call for accountability or reversal, proposing instead that Canada Post open a single “centrally located” replacement outlet. Such a proposal fails to address the real issue: Vic West residents are losing accessible service, and a distant alternative is not a solution. Our community expected stronger representation and a firm stand against a decision that defies logic; eliminating a cost-neutral, revenue-generating outlet under the pretense of “network management.”
Tomorrow, CTV News will be onsite to document the closure. We will continue to speak out and push for answers even after the doors close, on behalf of the Vic West residents who rely on this service and deserve accountability.
This closure is not the end, it’s the beginning of a larger call for accountability at Canada Post. Every new signature strengthens our case and shows that communities like Vic West will not be ignored.
Please continue to share and sign this petition. Together, we’re building a record that will grow stronger each day and cannot be dismissed by silence.
