On June 14, 2021, the Calexico Police Department was involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of 65-year-old Manuel Rojas Barajas. The department answered a call around 6 pm regarding a stabbing in progress that was taking place at the corner of Third Street and Paulin Avenue. According to multiple eyewitnesses, many had different versions of the altercation. Some reports say it was self-defense, others that it was an act of aggression. This aspect of the incident is still under investigation by the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.

When Calexico Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they engaged with Manuel by screaming at him to drop the knife. Five seconds after making verbal contact with Manuel, at a distance of approximately 25-30 ft away, they shot him immediately as he turned around to face the officers. Manuel was carrying a pocket knife with a 4-inch blade. The shots were fired with at least 3 other civilians in close proximity of Manuel putting their lives in immediate danger. Manuel later died at the hospital.

Earlier that same day, Calexico police officers were involved in a brief stand-off with a transient brandishing a loaded handgun that resulted in no gunfire when two officers hit the man with tasers and took him into custody.

Calexico Police Department is currently investigating the matter through internal affairs. We demand the department take into consideration the poor execution of their officers putting civilians in danger, overuse of lethal weapons, and the non-existent use of de-escalation tactics to avoid taking Manuel Rojas Baraja's life away. The imminent danger to the officers is simply not there based on the video evidence that they have provided. We demand accountability by having officers directly responsible for the death of Manuel Rojas Barajas be permanently removed from the Police force to keep our community safe.

El 14 de Junio del 2021, la policia de Calexico estuvo involucrada en un tiroteo que resulto en la muerte de Manuel Rojas Barajas de 65 años de edad. El departamento respondio a una llamada alrededor de las 6pm sobre un altercado con cuchillo en progreso que estaba ocurriendo en la esquina de la calle tercera y avenida Paulin. Segun multiples testigos, hay differented versiones del altercado. Algunos informan que fue defensa propia, otros que no fue asi. Este aspecto de el incidente esta siendo investigado por la oficina del alguacil del condado de Imperial. 

Cuando los policias de Calexico llegaron al lugar, se enfrentaron a Manuel gritandole que suelte el cuchillo. Tan solo cinco segundos despues de hacer contacto verbal con Manuel, a una distancia aproximada de 25 a 30 pies, le dispararon multiples veces de inmediato cuando este se dio la vuelta para mirar a los oficiales. Manuel llevaba con el una navaja de bolsillo con una hoja de 4 pulgadas. Los disparos se realizaron con al menos otros 3 civiles en proximidad y 1 en la linea directa de fuego, poniendo sus vidas en peligro inmediato. Manuel murio momentos mas tarde en el hospital.

Horas antes ese mismo dia, los oficiales de Calexico estuvieron involucrados en un breve enfrentamiento con un transeunte que tenia una pistola cargada que no resulto en disparos cuando dos oficiales utilizaron pistolas de electricidad (tasers) y lo detuvieron.

El Departamento de Policia de Calexico actualmente esta investigando el asunto a traves de asuntos internos. Exigimos al departamento que tome en consideracion los hechos de sus oficiales al poner en peligro a la poblacion civil tras disparar con inocentes en el area de fuego, el uso excesivo de armas letales, y el inexistente uso de metodos de desescala para evitar quitarle la vida a Manuel. El peligro inminente para los oficiales simplemente no esta ahi para justificar el uso de fuego letal y matar a Manuel Rojas Barajas basado en la evidencia de video proporcionada. Exigimos rendicion de cuentas haciendo que los oficiales directamente responsables de la muerte de Manuel sean retirados de la fuerza policial para mantener segura a nuestra comunidad. 

Por favor firme esta peticion para no permitir que este abuso de la fuerza policial quede impune y no se arriesgue a que estos policias vuelvan a nuestras calles.
