The Issue

In today’s fast-paced technological world, consumers deserve the right to repair and maintain the products they purchase. Apple Inc., one of the largest technology companies in the world, has consistently fallen behind in its product design, raising concerns about planned obsolescence and repairability. This petition urges Apple to end its practice of planned obsolescence and fully embrace the right to repair for all of its devices.

Planned obsolescence is a strategy used to ensure that consumers will need to purchase new products sooner than they otherwise might, by designing devices to become outdated or nonfunctional more quickly. Statistics show that a significant percentage of electronic waste results from such practices, with millions of devices being discarded each year. This not only burdens consumers financially but also contributes to environmental degradation due to increasing electronic waste.

Apple has, in the past, restricted access to repair parts, tools, and manuals, making it extremely challenging for consumers and independent repair shops to fix Apple products. This increases costs for users, forces many to consider upgrading unnecessarily, and discourages innovation within the repair industry. On the other hand, embracing the right to repair would not only empower Apple users with more freedom and autonomy but also depict Apple as a company committed to sustainability and ethical consumer practices.

By allowing greater access to necessary repair tools and information, Apple can support a global movement towards sustainability, reduce the environmental impacts of electronic waste, and offer its consumers more affordable options for device maintenance and repair.

We urge Apple to reconsider its stance and lead by example, fostering a more sustainable and user-friendly approach to technology. Please sign this petition to encourage Apple to stop planned obsolescence, enable repairs, and promote longevity in all its products.
