The Issue

As a proud member of the George Gordon First Nation (GGFN), I strongly believe that our community has the right to have a voice in the decision-making processes that directly affect our land and our future. The proposal to build the Bell Media Data Centre on our reserve land is a significant project, and it is crucial for us to ensure that our Treaty rights are respected and the environment is protected for future generations.

Our concerns stem from the obligations outlined in the Constitution Act of 1982. Under Section 35, it is explicitly stated that the Crown and Government, be it federal or provincial, have a Duty to Consult with Indigenous groups. Moreover, Section 15 stresses the importance of protecting individual rights, while Section 25 serves as a shield safeguarding our inherent rights. These sections emphasize the requirement for transparency and consultation, ensuring our voices are heard when projects of this magnitude are proposed on our lands.

We deserve transparency and participation in decisions that not only influence the present but will also shape the future of our descendants. Building the Bell Media Data Centre without adequate consultation is not only a breach of our rights but could also lead to unforeseen environmental impacts that may threaten our community's way of life.

A referendum amongst the GGFN band members will be a fair and democratic way for us to express our collective voice. It will ensure that all members of our community have the opportunity to voice their opinions on whether we support or oppose this project.

Our land is sacred, and its stewardship is a responsibility we do not take lightly. By pushing for a referendum, we are not just exercising our rights; we are taking a stand for our home. Let us join hands and demand that our voices be heard. I urge you to stand with us in this essential cause.

Please sign this petition to call for a referendum regarding the Bell Media Data Centre project on George Gordon First Nation reserve land. Your support will help us protect our rights, our environment, and our future generations.
