Change the students dress code, boys and girls can wear sleeveless shirts or nobody can.
The Issue
My name is Mandy Stump. I have two children enrolled in Holbrook High School. The picture above is of my son who is a Jr. I was called in to the school to bring my son a diffent shirt. The school did not feel that a sleeveless shirt was appropriate attire. In the student handbook you can see the dress code. It states that on line 5. Bare midriffs, halter-tops, tank tops (must be three fingers wide straps), spaghettie straps, spandex as outerwear and see-through clothing that are deemed indecent or inappropriate are not allowed. Exposed cleavage is inappropriate regarless of the type of shirt worn.
My sons shirt as you can see above, is 5 fingers width. But the superindendant and Principal will not allow 'BOYS' to wear sleeveless shirts at all. They both said that 'BOYS' wearing sleeveless shirts are a distraction. But they will allow girls to wear tank tops? I think it is just as much of a distraction if not more for the girls to wear tank tops.
Some people say that I am making to much out of this. But I love history and People have been fighting for years for equal rights. We can not take a step backwards now. I will not stand for sexism! It is wrong of the school to say that girls are allowed to wear tank tops and boys are required to wear sleeves, due to distraction.
If they insist that boys can not wear any type of sleeveless shirt, they need to make it so girls don't either. Or they can allow everyone to wear sleeveless shirts.
I beleive that everyone should have equal rights! It seems so strange to me that in 2014 I am having to make a stand for 'BOYS' rights. If you agree, please sign and share my petition.
