Hofstra University: Allow the Purchase of Non-Food Items as Part of Student Meal Plans

The Issue

Students should not have to buy regular toiletries and cleaning supplies from Dutch treats and the Netherlands dining hall with their own money. Hofstra meal points should be good enough! Aren’t meal points essentially the same as money? $1 in the real world going into your meal card is still $1 the value of $1 did not change. Not to mention the toiletries and cleaning supplies at Dutch treats and the Netherlands are already overpriced. This is unfair and we SHOULD NOT have to pay out of pocket for this. This is a example of classism because not all students can afford to go to a convenience store to purchase these items. Also, the majority of Hofstra students are on scholarships so they need to be able to use their meal points to buy these basic toiletries and cleaning supplies. It is also very classist to charge cleaning supplies because we are in the middle of a PANDEMIC! A lot of students used Dutch and the Netherlandsas their only resource to afford their families cleaning supplies during the lockdown and present day. Hofstra students can not afford toiletries and cleaning supplies in their own neighborhoods because of inflationdue to the pandemic. So for Hofstra to take this away is not only classist but also insensitive and disrespectful. Thus, we are asking Hofstra University to reverse their decision and allow students to use meal points for non-food items such as personal toiletries and cleaning supplies.
