The Issue

As a local resident of Abbey Wood in the Borough of Greenwich, I am deeply concerned about the significant and irreversible changes that the proliferation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) applications could bring to our beloved neighborhood. This area, clearly designed for families and long-term residents, stands on the brink of losing its balance, stability, and character.

In recent years, we have witnessed a marked increase in HMO applications and conversions. These high-density accommodations, if not carefully managed, can lead to numerous negative consequences, including increased traffic, overcrowding, strain on public services, and a general decline in the quality of life. Abbey Wood, with its unique charm and community-focused environment, is at risk of being transformed in a way that undermines its essence.

The impacts of a growing number of HMOs are well-documented. According to a study by the London Assembly, areas with high concentrations of HMOs often experience higher rates of antisocial behaviour, pressures on parking, and a loss of community coherence. These issues are not just statistics; they are the lived experiences of many communities who have gone down this path. We must learn from their experiences and take measures to preserve our community.

Importantly, local planning considerations specific to Greenwich emphasize the protection of residential areas that foster long-term living. The overdevelopment of HMOs runs counter to these goals. By voicing our concerns, we can appeal to local councils and planning authorities to take measured and informed decisions that respect the established fabric of our neighborhood.

I am calling on fellow residents, local business owners, and supporters of family-friendly communities to join me in objecting to the unchecked approval of HMO applications in Abbey Wood. Together, we can advocate for a future that retains the character of our community, supports sustainable planning, and ensures the neighborhood remains a vibrant and welcoming place for generations to come.

Please sign this petition to express our collective desire for careful and considered development in Abbey Wood.
