Air Informational Historical Based Shows on the History Channel
The Issue
Recently I've noticed that when I turn on the TV to watch an interesting documentary or show on the History Channel, there is nothing historical on. Why does a history channel exist when the only shows that play so frequently are shows about "Bigfoot" or aliens? Don't get me wrong, occasionally they do play historically based shows, but not nearly as much as they should.
As a student of history, pursuing a degree in such, I believe that history should be untainted and unbiased. The fact that the History Channel airs shows such as "Ancient Aliens," "Swamp People," and "Bigfoot Captured" is a huge slap in the face to people like me who harbor a passion for learning new things about the past. Aliens and Bigfoot are myths, for one, not an ounce of factual evidence suggesting the existence of such. Also since when are people who currently live in swamps history? These are just a few of the many unhistorical shows that the History Channel only airs for views.
It is common for a television channel to create these kinds of shows for ratings, but there are always solutions that can make everyone happy. With the introduction of a show on the History Channel called "Vikings" in 2013 it gave a realistic and historical story-like approach to the very real lives of 8th century vikings. The show gained a lot of popularity in the past few years, even reaching over 4 million viewers. These sort of well-made historical narratives not only gain plenty of viewers and boost ratings for the History Channel. This presents a win-win situation for that of history-loving viewers and the channel itself.
I'm hoping that this petition can give something the History Channel to think about and can inspire people to be interested in the importance of history.
