Please list the George Coles designed, Debenhams Department store building in Staines
The Issue
We request that Historic England list this fine and distinctive department store building designed by George Coles, the important British architect, justly celebrated for his wonderful Jazz - Modern cinemas. This big department store in Staines was his last major commission, but it is evident that he was still at the very top of his game.
The building makes a vital and very positive contribution to the townscape of Staines town centre, and to the distinctive character and special sense of place of our area. It was clearly purposefully designed to take advantage of its strategic positioning within Staines . It is the focal point and cumulation of important view corridors leading into the town centre.
This an outstanding and remarkably complete and unaltered example of a large mid twentieth century department store, with a supremely elegant design, executed by a most distinctively original and important British Twentieth Centre architect. It is also a cherished local landmark and brilliant town centre architecture.
Most importantly, this is NOT a time-expired or redundant building, but a modern well designed structure, fit for many decades of future service. Demolition would be wanton destruction and environmentally devastating, causing not only appalling damage to the visual amenity and heritage, but also in the release of embodied carbon. With architectural imagination, conversion and sensitive adaption of this building for much needed future town-centre and residential uses can and should provide what our town centre really needs.
