Obesity is now the most commonly diagnosed medical condition of childhood. The Centers for Disease Control has stated that because of diet realted illnesses, the current generation will probably be the first in American history to live a life span of ten years younger than their parents. Many causes to obesity and type II diabetes have been linked to the overly processed chemicals in our food supply.
If a child is spending 7 or more hours, consuming two-three meals a day plus snacks, in the Houston Independent School District, we would hope that they are receiving the best nutrition that they could possibly receive. More care needs to be taken at reviewing the ingredients of the foods being served to children. Currently, all sorts of items are allowed in the food served, including trans fats, hormones, antibiotics, chemicals used for processing, preservatives that include nitrates, MSG, aluminum, modified foods, artificial flavors and colors, high-fructose corn syrup and a wide range of other processed sugars.
We call on HISD Food Service to eliminate these harmful ingredients in our kids school meals and request that ingredient labels be made more readily available to the public. Children should have more access to fresh, scratch-made meals over the highly processed, fast-food options currently served to them.
