Revoke St. Xavier’s Sainthood And Bar Institutions From Honoring Him
The Issue
I am a born Christian. My father was a devout catholic; my uncle was the parish head of the famous church Saint Jean de Montmartre in Paris. I live in India and am married to an Indian from Delhi.
It is therefore, with deep concern, that I petition you in the matter of The Goan Inquisition. I believe that this is not only the desire of millions of right-minded pious Christians but also of millions of Indians.
The era of The Goan Inquisition in India has been accepted as one of the most shameful and cruel chapter in the history of the Catholic Church. Untold murders, rapes and cruelty were inflicted on the masses in the name of the absolutely non-violent Jesus Christ.
The Goan Inquisition continued for about 242 years from 1570's till 1812. This terrible Inquisition was set up by the notorious St. Francis Xavier. The British mercifully put an end to the Inquisition.
FACT, which was started by me in 2003, mounted the only known permanent exhibition in the world on the Goa Inquisition by the Portuguese. Your Holiness may view it here: www.goainquisition.info
Under your Papacy, and the Papacy of some of your predecessors, the Church has tried, despite several strong vested interests within, to reform and make Christianity a true reflection of Jesus Christ's teachings.
Your predecessor, His Holiness Pope John Paul partially corrected a historic wrong when he apologised for the excesses of the Inquisitions, although he did not mention the Goan Inquisition. We feel this spirit of humanity must be carried further in actions by you. In fact we have high hopes from Your Holiness.
We urge you once again to help heal this divided and suffering world and set an example for all by considering the following:
- Revoke the Sainthood of St. Francis Xavier and any other honours bestowed on him by the Holy See.
- Direct all Catholics and Catholic organisations to delete the name and memories of St. Xaviers from all educational, medical and other charitable and business institutions in India and around the world.
