Honor Jt’s memory with honorary diploma

My name is Kasandra and I want to tell you about my brother Jt. Jt was your typical teenager. He liked to spend time at the mall, hang out with friends, and he loved football. Football, especially University of Utah football, was his passion. Jt hoped to coach one day. In the meantime, like most teenagers, he couldn’t wait to graduate high school. But unlike most teenagers, he had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and had been in a wheelchair since the age of 10. Despite being one of the strongest people I’ve known, Jt lost his battle with DMD in November of 2013.

Jt would have been joining the class of 2015 this year and he still can. I started this petition to ask Hillcrest High School to honor my brother’s memory by issuing an honorary diploma in his name on graduation day.

My little brother fought hard his whole life and had every expectation to cross the graduation stage. It’s not hard for me to imagine him in his robes with the cap and tassel, his beautiful smile big and bright with pride. Unfortunately, his body couldn’t keep up with his spirit. It was his junior year. Jt was invited to be co-captain of the football team and he was excited to get started. The first few days back to school were bad for Jt. He was weak and sick. We thought it would pass. You never imagine, no matter what you know about a disease, it will over power the people you love.

If you want to know what kind of person Jt was, all you need is to look to his final moments. Jt found out his heart was failing him. The doctors offered to put him on the list for a heart transplant. My brother, only 16 years old, declined the transplant option. Jt said the heart should go to someone else. With those words, he was released from the hospital and into hospice care. My beautiful brother passed away weeks later.

Jt deserves his moment on the graduation stage. He showed a lifetime of strength, dedication, and love for his family and friends. Had his heart not failed him, Jt would be on stage come this graduation day. My family would like to see that day still happen. To be able to hear his name called with his classmates would be a beautiful way to honor Jt’s memory. It would mean the world for us to hang his diploma on the wall like we always planned.

Thank you for taking the time to share in my brother’s memory. I hope you will support us in calling for Hillcrest High School to honor my brother’s memory by issuing an honorary diploma in his name on graduation day. Please sign and share the petition today.
