End the Gender Discrimination In the Selective Service Law And Promote Equal Rights

End the Gender Discrimination In the Selective Service Law And Promote Equal Rights
The Issue
Feminists have long supported equal rights for women and expanded roles in our military, now including combat and special forces assignments. However, gender discrimination in the military still exists in the blatantly sexist exclusion of women in the Selective Service Law. The law's website states:
- "Selective Service law as it's written now refers specifically to "male persons" in stating who must register and who would be drafted. For women to be required to register with Selective Service, Congress would have to amend the law."
Feminists support for the Equal Rights Amendment has been unequivocal. It states:
- "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."
The definition of feminism is simple:
- "Someone who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes"
The point is clear. Selective Service Law is in direct contradiction of the Equal Rights Amendment, is gender discriminatory by nature, and proposes sexist patriarchal definitions of what women can do. Ending such practices is the core mission of feminism.
If feminism's role in our world is to end double standards, then this double standard must end.
I am calling on all feminists, from Hillary Clinton to Lena Dunham, Gloria Allred to Amy Schumer to support this petition and end the female exclusion from the Selective Service Law.
