HideTheHook Stop the forced exposure of alcohol

The Issue

"Our mission is to reduce alcohol visibility to build a safer, trigger-free community. We protect children from early exposure, support those in recovery by removing environmental pressures, and decrease the alcohol-related incidents that strain our emergency services. Together, we prioritize public safety over product promotion."

Constant visibility of alcohol in supermarkets normalises its consumption for children and creates a hostile environment for those struggling with addiction. Alcohol is a Group 1 Carcinogen and contributes to over 10,000 deaths annually in the UK, while costing the economy over £27 billion. Yet, despite these staggering statistics, alcohol remains prominently displayed in our shops, creating unnecessary exposure.

It's time we protected those who are most vulnerable—children and those in recovery. The goal of this petition is to urge major retailers and local authorities to relocate alcohol products into "screened-off" areas within supermarkets. By doing so, we can significantly reduce the risk of normalising alcohol consumption among children and make the shopping environment more supportive for those recovering from addiction.

Current "voluntary" codes that supermarkets adhere to are failing. We must look towards successful models, such as those implemented in Scandinavian countries, where regulated alcohol visibility has led to a decrease in consumption and alcohol-related harm.

Our suggested solution is not only feasible but has been proven effective elsewhere. We call on the government and major retailers to prioritize public health and take immediate action. Removing alcohol from constant display is a step forward in addressing both public health and economic costs associated with alcohol consumption.
