J.E. “Eddie” Guerra was appointed Hidalgo County Sheriff by Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia, Commissioner Precinct 1 A.C. Cuellar, Jr., Commissioner Precinct 2 Hector (Tito) Palacios, Commissioner Precinct 3 Joe M. Flores, and Commissioner Precinct 4 Joseph Palacios on April 2014. He oversees approximately 800 deputies and staff, including the Hidalgo County jail. Guerra’s vision is to ensure Hidalgo County is a safe and enjoyable place to live, work and visit under the leadership, service and protection of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

He is working diligently to restore the public trust in the County’s law enforcement and implement his mission which is to serve our community with proven crime prevention strategies, public outreach, and assistance in a professional and fiscally responsible manner through initiatives that protect and preserve the constitutional rights of all individuals. This is accomplished through leadership, training, collaboration, sound policies, innovation and community partnership.

Guerra has 20 years of law enforcement experience. Prior to becoming sheriff, Guerra served as Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Constable beginning in 2009. He was emphatically re-elected and served as Constable with distinction. Under his leadership, the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office received awards and recognition from ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Texas Attorney General’s Office, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Texas Department of Public Safety and Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District.
