HHS and USDA: Resolve the Dangerous Contradictions in the New Dietary Guidelines

The Issue

The federal government just released new Dietary Guidelines that promote increased consumption of red meat and full-fat dairy, while quietly removing long-standing warnings about cancer and heart disease.

This would be alarming on its own. But it’s worse when you realize that these new guidelines directly contradict decades of evidence — and the advice of nearly every major U.S. health organization.

The American Heart Association continues to warn that red meat and full-fat dairy are linked to heart disease, stroke, and premature death.

The American Cancer Society has long stated that processed and red meats are “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says poor diet is one of the leading contributors to the U.S. burden of chronic disease — including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

But the new food pyramid released by the USDA and HHS, backed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., features red meat and dairy at the top. It removes clear limits on saturated fat. It no longer warns about alcohol and cancer, and it makes no mention of underage drinking.

Even worse, the USDA justifies these changes with vague slogans like “Eat Real Food,” while dismissing long-standing health advocates as part of a “villainous” system.

This is confusing, dangerous, and unacceptable.

We are calling on HHS and the USDA to:

  • Restore alignment with public health science, including the positions of the AHA, ACS, and CDC
  • Reinstate clear dietary limits on red meat, saturated fat, and alcohol
  • Ensure all future guidelines are reviewed transparently, with input from independent health experts, not political appointees or industry lobbyists.

Americans deserve dietary guidance based on evidence, not ideology. When government nutrition advice contradicts medical consensus, the result is confusion — and real harm, especially to communities already facing high rates of chronic illness.

Tell HHS and the USDA: Fix the guidelines. Resolve the contradictions. Follow the science.
