The Uk is experiencing a driver shortage that is crippling the country with supply chains struggling significantly.
Shortages of food stocks in supermarkets, fuel supplies in petrol stations up and down the country, and limited stocks of essential medical supplies available in hospitals. The list goes on.
Why is there a driver shortage?
Several reasons are contributing to this shortage:
Poor working conditions for drivers.
Poor pay and benefits.
The risk of substantial government-enforced penalties for minor infringements to working hours and regulations.
Increased training costs.
One possibility to counter this driver crisis is for HMRC to allow tax relief for HGV drivers.
There are a substantial number of HGV license holders in the Uk lying dormant. Choosing not to work in the industry due to high tax penalties for holding a second job. These drivers could and should be out on the roads helping to ease the crisis and helping the economy.
