Re-open The Central

The Issue

In the House of Keys on Tuesday 27th October 2020 The Isle of Man Minister for Infrastructure said "in Ramsey in particular there is a burgeoning night-time economy". There is, and The Hon. Tim Baker MHK was quite correct to say so. There is however something missing from the scene. Something that us locals are a bit worried about. The Central Hotel on Parliament Square, hasn't re-opened since the March lockdown.

It's not a glitzy or glamorous pub. Its proper "old school" and known to Ramsey folk as "The Pig" . It has a great bunch of regulars, a pool table, a jukey and a darts board. There's a lounge (The Star Wars side) and a bar, plus a proper outdoor smoking shelter. The beer cellar is really a cellar and is known locally as "the sex dungeon". The landlady Sylv has (or at least had) a great team.

The building itself is known as The Old High Bailiff's residence and was formerly the home of the Island's longest serving High Bailiff Frederick Tellet. It's thought to have been built by Thomas Mylrea in 1797 and is likely to have been converted to a pub some time between 1880 and 1900. It is a listed building.
