The Henrico County school board has voted to rename Byrd Middle school. This is a petition being started by alumni of BMS, as well as having children attending the school currently. This is the perfect opportunity of renaming to honor a person who was a true advocate for education and cared about all of the students. Dr. Lonnie E. Gailes was the first principal of Byrd Middle School and served from 1971-1984. His career was as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in several Henrico County Schools. The school board may not wish to rename after a person, however looking back on history, i.e. In 1981 the school board voted to rename Bethleham elementary after Charles Johnson (Shenna Pike's grandfather:). He was honored because he was also a true advocate of the students. Thoughts of renaming as Quiocasson middle are also suggested, however as an Alumni; it is very impersonal. If it is renamed Dr. L E Gailes middle, maybe alumni will rally around this..contribute to the change...make a positive.
