Create Protected Bike Lanes on Washington Ave South of 5th Ave
The city and the county are in the planning process for finishing Washington Ave (between 5th Ave and 35W). Even though there is room for protected bike lanes on either side of the street, the County's current design plans will leave the bike lanes unprotected. The County needs to know that local residents feel strongly about this issue, so that they incorporate protected lanes into the final designs.
Protected bike lanes are much more comfortable for people on bikes. If you have seen the new Washington Ave protected lanes between Hennepin and 3rd, or traveled on any of the city's other protected lanes (like 11th Ave in downtown) you know what a difference they make!
Unprotected lanes make many cyclists feel vulnerable, and a result, are used most often by more confident cyclists. Washington Ave is full of local businesses that could benefit from having a protected bikeway that is accessible to riders of all skill levels, including children, and those who are newer to cycling. Not only that, but Washington Ave is a crucial corridor for connecting downtown with Seven Corners and the University of Minnesota's West Bank, all three of which have residents and commuters who would benefit from a more direct protected bicycle connection.
