Hendrix Culture Concerns: An Alumni Letter
Hendrix Culture Concerns: An Alumni Letter
The Issue
To the Current Hendrix administration,
I am writing on behalf of a group of Alumni, who after hearing about recent events on campus, feel it is necessary to raise our concerns.
Our first issue is about the recent and reckless increases in parking ticket prices and amount of tickets issued. Not having enough parking spots is not a new issue on Hendrix campus. With that taken into account, it seems especially predatory to hear that the Hendrix administration is encouraging college officials to actively target students at a time in our country where the financial burden on everyone is continuing to rise. Hendrix college is marketed as a place of opportunity for all students from any diverse set of economic backgrounds. It is particularly misleading then, to engage in cost-reaping initiatives that disproportionately affect lower income students. When we hear stories about students who are left struggling to pay unexpected fees out of pocket, it is truly disappointing and disheartening.
Our second concern is based on recent opinions and comments coming out of Student Affairs that reflect the current administration in areas we do not approve of. This point especially involves attitudes towards the Hendrix Senate. Hendrix Senate is an important tool where students are engaged in the campus community in order to have a voice on campus and real input on campus decisions. Now, there is talk that a shift has taken place in the Hendrix Administration from what used to be a culture that embraced the Senate, to now, a culture that thinks of the Senate negatively. The current Student Affairs department may even want to limit the input Hendrix Senate can have in the future, from what we have heard from others on campus.
As former Hendrix students, we find this new information about our alma mater to be deeply disturbing. Hendrix College is meant to be a safe place that respects its students and their opinions. Unfortunately, it seems that the campus culture is now taking a turn away from those values, and we would like to make our opinion known that we do not approve.
Thank you,
Former Alumni
