Helping Prepare High School Students For Life As An Adult

The Issue

Many people graduate high school but are not actually prepared for adult life. This is a problem because many students end up having to take remedial classes in college because the high school they went to did not teach them everything they needed to know. This bill also makes sure that high schools are teaching their students things that colleges and employers are looking for. You may have had trouble getting into the college you wanted or getting a job because your high school did not teach you the things you needed to know. As a result you may have been one of those people who end up having to take redeemal classes, costing money and time, and college is already expensive enough!

In Massachusetts 60% of community college students, 22% of state university students, and 10% of UMass students take at least one remedial course. Massachusetts also rates at the bottom nationally in the percentage of parents who say that their children are ready for college, many parents feeling concerned about their children and them going to college increases the need for students to learn what to expect when pursuing higher levels of education after high school graduation.

State bill H.596 would require instruction on taxes, credit, and budgeting as well as allowing students to earn credit through internships, work based learning, and service projects. Instead of MCAS, graduation would instead depend on completing a district approved program of study. This bill also ensures that a diploma in one town represents the same level of work as a diploma in another, it also provides grants and technical support to help local districts improve themselves.

If you are one of those students who had to take remedial courses, or a parent that is worried their child is not ready for college, sign this petition or contact Jim Hawkins to show your support.
