ACCION eNews: Reaching New Frontiers in India and Brazil :)
ACCION Invests in India’s Poorest
ACCIONistas enjoy the challenge of bringing economic empowerment to new frontiers, which is why a new partnership with Saija Finance Private Limited, a start-up microfinance organization in Bihar, India, has ACCION staff feeling especially motivated.
Saija is the only microfinance institution in Bihar, an Indian state that is home to a staggering 90 million people, with a 90 percent illiteracy rate. Bihar is one of the most oppressively impoverished regions in the world, with nearly half its people living on less than a dollar a day – one of the world's 'hard' places to work and where ACCION believes its demonstration effect will encourage other microfinance organizations to follow.
ACCION Gets the Green Light in Brazil
Just last week, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a presidential decree giving ACCION the green light to begin operations in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. Despite a strong ecotourism industry, Amazonas is still the second-poorest state in the country, and microfinance has only reached 8-10 percent of the estimated one million microentrepreneurs who could benefit from financial services.
ACCION’s work in Manaus will focus on finding innovative ways to deliver credit and other financial services to low-income people in the region, while simultaneously ensuring that the economic development of Manaus’s people is in harmony with the environmental protection of its nearby rainforest. ACCION plans to begin lending in early 2010.
