Help Us To Beat The Homeless & Drugs Crisis

The Issue

My son Frankie was a fun, loving & caring boy who had his whole life ahead him, but unfortunately this was not to be & he lost his life far too soon at the young age of 30 years old.  Frankie died of a Valium overdose - despite not being a drug addict - while being housed in a notorious homeless hotel by Glasgow City Council earlier this year.  Frankie was using the hotel as a stop gap while awaiting a council tenancy.

I believe my son fell prey to rife drug dealing at these premises, three people have died here of suspected overdoses in the past month and nothing is being done about this.

I have been informed by various people who have lived there recently that drug dealing is openly taking place, despite the fact people are dying.  This was also backed by a hotel whistle-blower, who stated that he was told not to evict suspected dealers.  WhatsApp messages were produced by this whistle-blower and these messages showed his determination to try and bring an end the overdoses at the Queens Park Hotel, however management stated that he was acting without due authority.

My son was kicked out for turning up 20 minutes late one night due to the curfews in place and he was moved to another hotel for 7 days but then was allowed to return.  It would appear they are being stricter with the curfews that they are with the drugs being sold on the premises!!

I am now demanding a full enquiry into the way these places are run & funded by the Government. The system is all wrong and something must be done about it.  There have been so many deaths recently, my son being one of these & I want to make sure that I do everything in my power to help, so that no other family has to suffer the way I have.  The death rate is pilling up and nothing is being done about this.

Nicola Sturgeon has openly admitted that she and her government took their eye off the ball, as Scotland racked up the worst drugs death rate in Europe under the SNP.  The First Minister was accused of a series of failures in power, and of recklessly wanting to focus on independence instead. The First Minister allowed a drug rehabilitation facility in her own Glasgow south-side constituency to close two years ago, despite the surge in deaths.

Now Scotland's new First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has been urged to put the country’s shameful drug deaths crisis to the top of his list of priorities but still nothing has been done so far.  I believe Humza Yousaf and other leadership candidates have placed too little focus on the enduring emergency, and the SNP have failed to make any brave decisions while the deaths have piled up.

Despite increased funding, the latest annual death count is 12 per cent worse than when the short-lived Scottish Drug Deaths Taskforce was formed in 2019.

The drugs minister Angela Constance also said that she wanted to do things better and faster, but she has disappeared through a revolving door to a new department and there is no evidence of any real improvement.  The SNP are spending money on the same failing approaches.

Our current system is broken, and it needs a rebuild. Anyone can see that there are too many people who are being held in addiction and they are not getting better.  The current systems need to be done away with and started again because people are stuck in a hole, and they have no way of getting out.

These hotels that are housing the homeless are raking in the money & putting nothing back in.  The places are hell holes and not fit for purpose.  I want to know if Glasgow City Council has seen these places and the living conditions that they are putting people in.

A Maintenance boss at one of these homeless hotels was sacked for flagging asbestos concerns.  He raised concerns about the presence of asbestos at the St Enoch Hotel on Howard Street in Glasgow and was dismissed from employment, with bosses giving no reason for the decision.

An employment tribunal found that he was sacked for raising health and safety concerns, but the firm entered administration just days after he was awarded a total of £23,331.57.

The company was dissolved after this payment was awarded and it is now believed that other family members continue to operate the hotels under different companies.  Red flags are everywhere!!

Someone now must take responsibility for all that is going on with this situation, better facilities are required to help & support the homeless & people with addictions.  An investigation should be made into where this money is going & what these hotels are doing with it.  They should have more interactive staff on site who are also first aid trained as they should have a duty of care to look after the people who are housed here.  Support workers on site are also needed to help in times of distress.  The facilities are poor, and the accommodation is not fit for purpose.

More life-saving supplies & equipment are also needed. They should have Naloxone on site, this is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids.  Activated charcoal as provided in general poisoning cases is sufficient to prevent diazepam intoxication with or without ethanol.  These measures could help to reduce the number of deaths.

More policing is also required to tackle the drugs being sold here.  Regular visits, searches, busts, whatever it takes to help!!

Glasgow City Council say that people make Glasgow, they should be putting their hands in their pockets to make it a better, cleaner & safer place to live.
