Why this petition matters

The Medina Black Horse Troop Farm is located on the border of Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream. Many of you have may have passed it many times without knowing about the special horses that reside here, many who have graced our community parades year after year.

Unfortunately, with barely a months notice, the farm has been sold to a contractor with not enough time for the boarders to save / purchase the barn themselves, or enough time for the horses to find new homes.

For some, it will be life threatening to be moved and may result in euthanasia as the alternative.

These horses deserve much better treatment than this and we are looking for as many shares and signatures as possible as well as legal support and advice to see if there is a way we can save this precious barn. The last around in our community. Please help us convince the owners to pull out of this sale and allow us time to explore alternatives. We are hoping for a miracle and to do everything possible to keep this barn in our community and expand it's use to include riding lessons, therapeutic riding services for the children's hospital, and for the veterans in our community. We have the capability to make this happen we just need the time and the support.

Some background:

The Medinah Black Horse Troop of Chicago is one of more than 30 Shriner horse troops in the United States. The Chicago Troop formed in 1954 and moved to its current location in 1990. Their mission has been to make people aware of the Shriners Children's Hospitals. The Shriners have 3 burn institutes and 19 orthopedic hospitals throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The Medinah Black Horse Troop participate in approximately 20 parades a year and have visited the Shriner Hospital for Children in Chicago. There are currently 4 active Troop horses and 2 retired horses, as well as 8 private boarders who call this farm home. For many of the troop horses, this barn is the only home they have ever known and they are well cared for and happy.

It is a beautiful facility and very welcoming and accessible for those with special needs. Our hope is to save this barn and expand to become a therapeutic facility for the Shriner's Children's Hospital and veterans.

Right now a commercial contract has been accepted and the closing is scheduled for November 2nd. The ability for the horses to be cared for, fed, and use the indoor ring is forcing horses out even sooner. As early as this month.

We hope with enough community support and pressure we can convince the owners to back out of this sale and / or give us more time to secure adequate boarding for the 14 remaining horses. The older horses have conditions that would make it dangerous for them to be moved and their owners are having to consider euthanasia.

Please share this story with friends as we try to save this beautiful stable and the long tradition of the Medinah Black Horse Troop.

"We ride so the children can walk."
