The Issue

The tennis courts at Aragon high school are currently in poor condition, with visible cracks and uneven surfaces that make them difficult and unsafe to use. These issues not only affect the quality of play but also increase the risk of injury for students who use the courts during physical education classes, team practices, competitive play and recreational time. In addition, members of the local community also use these courts, meaning the condition impacts a wider group beyond just students.

Students and community members deserve access to safe and well-maintained courts. Tennis is an important sport that promotes physical activity, teamwork, and skill development, but the current condition of the courts makes it challenging for both students and community members to fully participate and enjoy the game.

We respectfully ask the school administration to prioritize the repair and resurfacing of the tennis courts. We should be able to take pride in our school’s facilities, which reflect the values and standards of our community. Fixing the cracks and repaving the surface will create a safer environment and allow students and community members to proudly and safely use the courts to their full potential.

The District has secured bids for the AHS tennis court repairs planned for this summer. The selected quote is being submitted to the Board for approval, and once approved, they will confirm the project schedule. At this time, the District representatives are tentatively requesting that the work begin around June 20, with an anticipated completion date of July 13. Please note that the contractor has not yet confirmed availability for these dates. Respectfully, Mike [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. Aragon Students, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns about the current condition of the Aragon Tennis Courts. Our Maintenance and Operations (M&O) department has been reviewing the courts over the past two months after receiving requests from the school site to assess their condition, particularly the cracking affecting playability and safety. The M&O team consulted with five different firms, all of whom agreed that the straight-line cracks are due to the asphalt being installed in two separate pours, not due to major structural problems. This is good news because it means repairs can move forward sooner rather than later. We received five proposals for the repair work and have selected one that is currently being submitted for Board approval. Once that process is complete, we will finalize the project schedule. At this point, we are tentatively aiming to begin work around June 20, with completion expected by July 13, though these dates are still subject to confirmation. We will also be adding pickleball lines to the courts as part of the striping work, based on a request from the school and similar updates at other campuses. Thank you again for your engagement and for helping bring attention to this project. Randall P. Booker Superintendent
