Help us push for a Lindsay Clancy Act
The Issue
Becoming a new mother should be a joyous occasion, but for some, it becomes a battle with severe postpartum psychiatric illnesses that threaten their own lives and the safety of their loved ones. I’ve seen what it's like to experience the overwhelming despair and confusion that can accompany these disorders. It's for this reason that I support the proposed "Lindsay Clancy Act," which aims to transform how we identify and treat these conditions, ultimately saving lives.
The Lindsay Clancy Act would introduce a comprehensive, unified approach to dealing with postpartum psychiatric illnesses. Currently, many healthcare systems lack consistent methods for pinpointing these conditions early, often lumping postpartum depression with postpartum anxiety and psychosis, despite their distinct challenges and impacts. The Act would ensure that postpartum psychosis is recognized as a severe psychiatric illness requiring immediate attention, different from the more widely acknowledged postpartum depression.
Tragically, the gap in proper evaluation and treatment has led to preventable tragedies. Research published in reputable journals like The Lancet indicates that one in seven women will experience a postpartum mood disorder, but not all will receive the treatment they need due to varying standards across medical practices. The Act would mandate the use of evidence-based evaluation standards in any legal claims where postpartum mental health is a factor, potentially protecting both the mother and any affected family members.
The financial burden of untreated postpartum disorders is enormous, with the National Institutes of Health estimating costs upwards of $14 billion annually in the United States alone. With effective intervention, not only can lives be saved, but families can be kept intact, and healthcare costs can be significantly reduced.
By signing this petition, we urge lawmakers to pass the Lindsay Clancy Act and create a future where all new mothers receive the support and care they desperately need. Together, we can ensure that no mother suffers in silence and every family can thrive. Please join me in supporting this crucial legislation by signing the petition today.
**This petition doesn’t cover all the changes we should expect lawmakers to make but if it gets enough support we can begin to discuss and debate the steps and changes needed to prevent this from happening again.
