About 15 minutes ago, my 8-year-old and I came within seconds of being struck by an SUV on Monroe Ave. The driver was going approximately 20 mph over the speed limit and failed to yield at the pedestrian crossing. The other cars had all stopped in the inside lane but the outside lane did not and came out of no where. Music loud and clearly distracted. They slightly paused but kept going. A few months back, the same thing happened to my Husband. 

We immediately notified the police, but this incident made it painfully clear that something needs to change.

We are hoping to gather community support and start a petition requesting flashing red warning lights at these pedestrian crossings, similar to the safety measures installed closer to the Cacoon crossing.

My child and I did everything right. We used the designated crossing, followed the signs, and were paying attention and it still wasn’t safe. So many families access this crossing and it’s only a matter of time until a preventable accident happens. 

Our neighborhood is growing quickly, and there are infrastructure improvements we still need, including streetlights. But above all, we need PROTECTION for our children, families, and pedestrians.

It should not take a child being struck or someone losing their life for action to be taken when we already know there is a safety concern that can be addressed.

We have contacted the city several times about this issue. Today, we came terrifyingly close to experiencing the consequences firsthand.

Please help us advocate for safer pedestrian crossings on Monroe Ave. If you live in this area, have experienced similar concerns, or would be willing to sign and support a petition, please speak up. We need our city to take action before something tragic happens.
