The Issue

We, the youth and organizers of WaR (We Are Revolutionary), are calling on our city and community to support the creation and implementation of a safety plan to address the rising levels of youth violence in Albany. Without a safety plan for our young people, our youth remain vulnerable especially as a citywide curfew is being discussed. Many of us are already struggling to access the resources we need, such as food, housing, and job opportunities. It’s time to come together to create a plan that reflects the needs of our community and uplifts our youth.

Why We Created This Plan
We developed this safety plan because we believe that real safety does not come from punishment or policing but from prevention, healing, access, and opportunity. Albany is a city where unexpected situations can happen, and many young people are struggling with trauma without support. Our plan exists to make sure youth know where to go, who to call, and how to get the help they need in times of crisis. It’s also about long-term solutions, building a stronger, healthier, and more connected community for everyone.

We chose this plan because it reflects our lived experiences, and it addresses the root causes of violence, not just the symptoms. It’s proactive, trauma-informed, and youth-centered.

What Our Plan Includes
1. Job Access & Economic Opportunity

We propose increased funding for youth-centered job programs, mentorships, and entrepreneurship initiatives that provide real pathways to financial independence and community engagement.

2. Support for Youth in the Legal System

Many of our peers are caught in the probation process without guidance. Our plan includes support systems to help youth navigate legal challenges and get connected to programs that build them up, not tear them down.

3. Community Healing & Connection

We will organize healing circles, youth forums, and restorative justice events to rebuild trust and connection between youth, adults, and institutions. These spaces will also serve as points of access to critical resources like therapy, housing support, and education.

4. Violence Intervention & Trauma Support

Our plan expands community violence intervention programs and provides more victim services. We are calling for trauma-informed care, including fatality reviews and intervention strategies, to break cycles of harm and prevent further tragedies.

5. A Vision for Equity & Safety for All

We envision an Albany where safety means having a roof over your head, access to mental health care, a quality education, and the ability to thrive, not  just survive. This is a plan rooted in equity, healing, and community-led solutions

Our Vision:

A city where every young person feels seen, safe, and supported. A city where violence is not a norm but a memory we are actively healing from.

We believe our safety plan can be the blueprint for lasting change in Albany and we invite you to join us in bringing it to life.
