Florence County, South Carolina is home to a troubling reality faced by too many: corruption within the Department of Social Services (DSS). The experiences I have endured, alongside countless other residents, paint a bleak picture of an institution meant to serve and protect its most vulnerable citizens. Instead, we've encountered bias, inefficiency, and, heartbreakingly, neglect—all of which harm our community's social fabric. Consider the desperate phone calls overlooked, the pleas ignored, and the countless families left without essential support. I've personally been impacted and seen those who needed guidance and assistance most, find themselves navigating a system that seems indifferent, at best, and actively obstructive, at its worst. Instead of upholding their mandate to foster well-being and social justice, there are glaring examples where the Florence County DSS has fallen far short, sometimes even perpetuating the very problems they are tasked to solve. Like not removing children from their homes and trying to fix the issue at hand but instead removing the children from the home and breaking families apart and keeping them from each other. That is what I personally been dealing with. Statistics indicate that nearly 30% of abuse and neglect reports have not been thoroughly investigated over the past year. How many more children, women, and men will suffer before we see real change? Around the state and nation, successful social service departments provide a model we can strive toward. It’s a clarion call for Florence County to embrace best practices, to restructure for accountability, and to renew its oath to serve. Our goal is straightforward yet profound: Transform the Florence County DSS into a transparent, accountable, and truly effective institution. To achieve this, these steps are proposed: 1. Conduct an independent audit of the Florence County DSS to pinpoint areas of malpractice and inefficiency. 2. Implement rigorous staff training focusing on ethics, oversight, and state-of-the-art child and family services. 3. Introduce a transparent complaints and review procedure allowing citizens to voice concerns without fear of retribution. 4. Establish an oversight committee made up of community leaders, social work professionals, and, most importantly, affected residents themselves. Our community deserves an institution that operates with integrity and compassion. Let us hold those in power accountable and work towards rebuilding trust between the Department and its citizens.
