We, the undersign, call on the Government of Canada to create a new occupation code specific for bicycle mechanics.
In Canada, the occupation of bicycle mechanics has not been given the recognition it deserves as a distinct category under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. This omission not only underestimates the crucial role bicycle mechanics play in supporting the cycling industry but also puts Canada out of step with its major trading partners like the United States, Europe, and Australia where bicycle mechanics are recognized as a distinct and essential profession.
Currently, Canada’s NOC system lacks a specific code for bicycle mechanics, bundling them into broader categories that obscure their unique skills and contributions. Recognizing bicycle mechanics with their own NOC code would align Canada with international standards and highlight the importance of sustainable transportation solutions. As cities and communities increasingly prioritize environmentally-friendly transportation options to meet critical climate change targets, the role of bicycle mechanics becomes integral to ensuring the safety and efficiency of burgeoning cycling infrastructures.
The bicycle industry in Canada has been growing, fueled by a combination of increased environmental awareness and urban mobility challenges. A specific NOC code would not only support workforce development but also encourage investment into the industry by offering precise data that can assist in policy and economic planning. It would empower the industry to attract new talents and ensure high-quality service standards are developed across the country.
Furthermore, with cycling being advocated as a means to reduce traffic congestion, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, it is imperative that the infrastructure supporting this shift is robust and reliable. By formally recognizing bicycle mechanics, Canada can affirm its commitment to sustainable development goals and demonstrate leadership in promoting clean, efficient, and accessible modes of transportation.
To align with our economic partners and to further propel the Canadian bicycle industry, we urgently call on the government to create a distinct NOC code for bicycle mechanics. Such an action would validate their expertise, protect consumer interests, and bolster Canada’s journey towards a sustainable future.
