Norfolk is for Loving (#NFK4Loving)

Norfolk is for Loving (#NFK4Loving)

The Issue

On June 12, 2020, the Confederate Monument in Norfolk colloquially known as “Johnny Reb” was removed from Downtown Norfolk, VA, in the wake of the racial justice movement.

Coincidentally, June 12th also commemorates “Loving Day”, which is the day Mildred & Richard Loving won their case, Loving v. Virginia, in the US Supreme Court, allowing interracial marriage.

The mayor and city council of Norfolk should take this opportunity to celebrate this moment and erect a monument dedicated to the legacy of this historic Supreme Court decision.  Let this be the site celebrating inclusivisity and love, truly putting “Virginia is for Lovers” and “Norfolk is for Loving” in action.
