HELP US CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY BY ADDING A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
The issue
We are writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern for the residents of our community regarding traffic safety. We're sure you are familiar with the intersection of Smiths Rd and Reynolds Rd. Pettys Reserve and its playground have seen a noticeable increase in traffic volume over the past few years. This has raised concerns amongst the community about the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
In addition to the existing traffic issues, we are increasingly alarmed by recent accidents involving local schools and childcare centers. The increase in traffic poses a heightened risk, especially with the presence of young children who may not fully understand the dangers of crossing busy roads. The situation is compounded by the recent incidents that highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures at this intersection.
We believe that installing traffic lights, an overpass, or even just a pedestrian crossing at this intersection would greatly enhance safety. On a daily basis, we witness people running across the road to catch the bus at the bus stops located on either side of Reynolds Rd. This issue could lead to catastrophic consequences. The speed limit is 70 km/hr along Reynolds Rd in either direction. At this speed, a vehicle needs to slow down for a pedestrian at least 29 meters prior to avoid a collision.
There is also now a childcare center servicing the community at First Steps, 58-60 Smiths Rd. Numerous times, parents attempt to cross the road with prams and toddlers to reach Pettys Reserve playground, often at peak times during after school runs. The combination of increased traffic, recent accidents, and the presence of vulnerable pedestrians underscores the urgent need for action to improve safety at this intersection.
Despite our attempts to raise these concerns through various channels, including outreach to the local MP, we have yet to receive a response. We hope this message prompts immediate attention to our ongoing safety concerns in the community.
