The Issue

In the city of Santa Maria, there has been an unfortunate issue causing confusion, panic, and fear among residents when distinguishing city rangers from immigration officers. This is due to the similarity in their uniforms particularly their green vests and lack of continuity in ICE agents own uniform. This confusion leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety for residents, particularly those from our hard working immigrant communities who fear interactions with immigration.

The current city ranger uniforms feature colors that are often associated with immigration enforcement agencies. The unintentional similarities have sparked concern among residents who might avoid seeking assistance or engaging with city rangers due to this fear or even stop in the middle of completing regular everyday tasks due to fear. Many residents will leave the area if they see city rangers arrive. Our immigrant community reports feeling uncomfortable and scared when they spot and confuse city rangers for ice agents, leading to avoidable distress and distrust within our community.

A solution to this problem is to change the color of the city rangers vests or at the very least add a distinguishable patch to them similarly to the autism awareness one. If we pick a different color that isn't commonly associated with any enforcement agency then the city can help fix this confusion and help build trust with the community. This change will foster a more welcoming environment by allowing city rangers to serve residents more effectively rather than being perceived as a threat by said residents.

The city's responsibility is to ensure that all residents feel safe and secure. By making this change, Santa Maria can set the tone for inclusivity and understanding.

This act of kindness born from empathy and understanding will further strengthen community trust and cooperation. We urge the City of Santa Maria to take immediate action by redesigning the city rangers uniforms to include colors that do not resemble those of immigration officers or to include a visible patch for the vests that represents the city of Santa Maria and in turn helps identify city rangers to our community. Please join us in supporting this important initiative to help us push forward a positive change.
