My boyfriend is genuinely my best friend. We’re both trans guys navigating our identity and lives together. And more importantly, we're both just kids. However, recently, his parents have decided to send him to conversion therapy, a terrible practice that they believe will change who he is at his core. This decision not only stems from a lack of understanding of our identities but also from a refusal to accept us as we truly are.

Conversion therapy is a dangerous and discredited practice that seeks to "cure" individuals of their LGBTQ+ identity. As if it's a disease. It's been condemned by every major medical and psychological organization, including the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Studies have shown that conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and, tragically, suicide. It's banned in 22 states!

In Wake County, there's an urgent need for legal protection against such harmful and abusive practices. Many other communities across the United States have already taken this critical step, and it's time for Wake County to follow suit. It's time for our local government to stand up for our rights and safety. 

banning conversion therapy will ensure that future generations of LGBTQ+ youth in Wake County grow up in an environment where they are accepted and supported for who they are. No one should ever have to endure the mental and emotional trauma that conversion therapy causes.

We demand that our local leaders take immediate action to outlaw conversion therapy in Wake County. This is not just about my boyfriend and me; it’s about protecting all LGBTQ+ youth in Wake County from a harmful practice that should have no place in our community.

You never know who could be suffering with this- It could be your classmate, someone you smiled at in the hallway, a lab partner. So many people are put through this inhumane treatment, and we as a county are putting our children at risk.
