Broedplaats landbouwbelang is a squat and cultural freezone in Maastricht that was squatted in 2001/2002. It is a place for events, a place for culture, a place to make memories and a place where many people have a lot of memories.
The building houses a lot of events/initiatives, from the jam session every Tuesday to music events of all kinds over the weekend, on top of this there are art spaces/ateliers, the foodbank which tries to prevent food waste, 2 secondhand shops, streetdance workshops, boxing workshops and more, all of this donation based to keep culture accessible for everyone.
Safe to say it is a very important space for a lot of people, but sadly enough the municipality wishes to erase this culture out of the city.

The municipality has plans to replace this space with penthouses and the studies European Studies, Internationale Communication and languages, International Business and the vertaalacademie. The original plan, presented in 2023 had intended to house the Theatre Academy and the Conservatory to keep the cultural spirit of the place alive. Yet the current plan completely erased the cultural importance of the LBB within the structure of the city.

Therefore we oppose this new plan, since it completely ignores this cultural importance and the history of the building as a cultural freezone, and we urge the municipality to reflect on these choices and what's at stake for the cultural structure of the city.
