Bring Back the Bayern Kurve!
Bring Back the Bayern Kurve!
The Issue
Kennywood, located in West Mifflin, is a great theme park and offers spectacular rides and food. In 2019, Kennywood had a total of 45 rides, but when 2021 came by, it dropped down to 41. This is due to Kennywood removing four rides on November 3rd, 2020. These rides were the Kangaroo, the Paratrooper, Volcano, and the Bayern Kurve. For the 2022 season, Kangaroo has come back to the park, which is great! But all of the other rides are still left in the dark. My favorite out of all of them is the Bayern Kurve. The Bayern Kurve was a simple flat ride with 16 cars to resemble bobsleds. The ride's theming was around an Olympic bobsledding completion. The 16 cars started off moving slowly while being parallel to the ground, but as the ride collected speed, they banked inward. Once the ride has reached top speed, there was an airhorn that could be heard from throughout the whole park. The ride also had a chug-chug sound and a specific whine when it sped up with a tire system. The Bayern Kurve was made by the popular engineer Anton Schwarzkopf. Anton also made the very popular "Laser Loop" located where the Phantoms Revenge in the 80s. If you ever rode rollercoasters like the, "Olympic Looping" or, "Jet Star, "you rid a Schwarzkopf coaster. Circling back, the Bayern Kurve was located next to the basketball game and the Phantom's Revenge entrance. It was never very popular but it was loved by its few riders. This rides removal hurts even more than the others because it is a dying breed with only 5 left in the world, with only 1 in the U.S, unlike the Paratrooper and Volcano which could be found in park withing the state. The Bayern Kurve in the U.S. is called berserker and it is themed to a fairy tale village and is not half as fast as Kennywood's was. I love that they have a Bayern Kurve, but they couldn't even give it the original theming nor the name. After the removal of the Log Jammer, another beloved ride that was installed right around when the Bayern Kurve was, We cannot let Kennywood keep destroying these memories. My family loved being able to go to the Bayern Kurve and know it a a very uncommon model and be thankful we have one. I do want to note the putting up of another Bayern Kurve at Knobels Amusement Park, but that is still 3.5 hours from where I live. Kennywood officials used the excuse of,
"Even in a National Historic Landmark, change is a constant at Kennywood. In the past three years, we've invested more in new attractions than at any previous point in the park's storied history. Thomas Town has created a new destination for children and families from all over, featuring some of the world's most popular characters. And while 2020 was a challenging season for Steelers Country, 2019's Best New Roller Coaster and the unprecedented partnership between team and park hold great potential for the future
"Part of the evolution is a continuous examination of the sustainability, capacity and popularity of our attraction lineup. As part of that process, the following rides are being retired: Kangaroo, Paratrooper, Bayern Kurve and Volcano.
"While these attractions have created countless special memories for our Guests and Team Members over the years, we have determined the best path forward at this time is to say goodbye. We hope you will join us in cherishing the memories with these rides, and we look forward to adding new attractions that create new moments to treasure in future seasons." This is directly from their Instagram. I know for a fact that the Bayern Kurve was shipped to the Berserker for parts and that just makes me miss it more knowing that other people couldn't ride it, it was just a part donor. And because of this, the beautiful mountain scenery and the beloved spectators, were thrown away. I mean come on Kennywood! This is history! If you too think the Bayern Kurve should be added back to Kennywood, please sign this petition. Thank you so much, Trey Litz.
